Cited Sources and Their Uses
These 36 entries correspond to the edition’s existing citations and their version checks. Scholarly titles retain their original wording; legal and policy sources show the Chinese title and an editorial English translation. Read each entry’s use and limits together. Reading scope identifies the pages or provisions actually examined in editorial checks, not full-text review. Original cited ranges not individually listed as checked do not become newly verified merely because they remain in the notes.
Scholarly Sources for Comparison
R01 · The Making and Unmaking of Ethnic Boundaries: A Multilevel Process Theory
Wimmer, Andreas. 2008. “The Making and Unmaking of Ethnic Boundaries: A Multilevel Process Theory.” American Journal of Sociology 113(4): 970–1022. https://doi.org/10.1086/522803.
Use: Used in S01 and S02 as a point of contact for mechanisms of ethnic boundary formation, maintenance, and change. The article connects classificatory struggles and negotiations among actors to institutions, power, political networks, and varying degrees of closure and groupness.
Limits: This does not establish the book’s ontology of community or nation, or its judgment that the state is not their source. Page 981 challenges the assumption that an ethnic category is a unitary actor; page 982 still permits varying degrees of groupness. Page 1011 acknowledges that some hypotheses about boundary properties remain to be tested.
Reading scope: Printed pages 970, 981, 982, 1008, 1011. Selected-page review, not a reading of the entire article.
R02 · The Study of Boundaries in the Social Sciences
Lamont, Michèle, and Virág Molnár. 2002. “The Study of Boundaries in the Social Sciences.” Annual Review of Sociology 28(1): 167–195. https://doi.org/10.1146/annurev.soc.28.110601.141107.
Use: Used in S01 and S02 for the distinction between symbolic and social boundaries and for relational processes of classification, membership, recognition, exclusion, and community formation. Pages 168–169 define the distinction; page 181 addresses communities, national identities, and spatial boundaries.
Limits: This review maps research traditions rather than empirically validating the book’s judgments about the reality of national communities or its judgment that the state is not their source. Its discussion of symbolic and social boundaries as real on different levels is not interchangeable with the book’s ontology. The earlier cited range 181–190 includes the bibliography, which begins on page 188; pages 189–190 are bibliography pages.
Reading scope: Printed pages 167, 168, 169, 181, 186, 188, 189, 190. Selected-page review, not a reading of the entire article.
R03 · Collective Memory and Cultural Identity
Assmann, Jan. 1995. “Collective Memory and Cultural Identity.” Translated by John Czaplicka. New German Critique, no. 65: 125–133. https://doi.org/10.2307/488538.
Notes: S03.
Use: Used in S03 for the transmission and maintenance of shared memory through communication, texts, images, rituals, monuments, institutional practices, and specialized carriers. Page 125 frames continuity through socialization and custom rather than phylogenetic inheritance; pages 129 and 131–132 discuss objectification, organization, media, and reflexivity.
Limits: This does not establish the book’s ontology of the nation or a hereditary national essence. Czaplicka is the translator, not a coauthor: page 125 credits Jan Assmann and page 133 explicitly credits the translator. Crossref currently flattens both people into author fields and records only the starting page; the original publication controls attribution and the complete page range.
Reading scope: Printed pages 125, 126, 129, 131, 132, 133. Selected-page review, not a reading of the entire article.
R04 · Social Memory Studies: From “Collective Memory” to the Historical Sociology of Mnemonic Practices
Olick, Jeffrey K., and Joyce Robbins. 1998. “Social Memory Studies: From ‘Collective Memory’ to the Historical Sociology of Mnemonic Practices.” Annual Review of Sociology 24(1): 105–140. https://doi.org/10.1146/annurev.soc.24.1.105.
Notes: S03.
Use: Used in S03 for the historical sociology of mnemonic practices. Pages 111–112 discuss conceptual disputes and favor distinct practices at different social sites; page 123 addresses family influences, mnemonic socialization, and generational differences.
Limits: The reviewed authors’ positions are not all findings established by Olick and Robbins themselves. The review does not establish a mystical group mind or the book’s ontology of nation. Page 135 is the bibliography, not an additional page of argument.
Reading scope: Printed pages 105, 111, 112, 123, 135. Selected-page review, not a reading of the entire article.
R05 · Social Capital: Its Origins and Applications in Modern Sociology
Portes, Alejandro. 1998. “Social Capital: Its Origins and Applications in Modern Sociology.” Annual Review of Sociology 24(1): 1–24. https://doi.org/10.1146/annurev.soc.24.1.1.
Use: Used in S04 for resources, exclusion, and excessive demands generated through relations, and in S06 for outsider exclusion, excessive claims on members, and restrictions on freedom. Pages 15–18 analyze negative consequences; pages 21–22 stress conceptual and causal care.
Limits: The review does not establish the book’s full composite scenario involving care, income, residence, and marriage, or identify the differentiation network with social capital. Its context-dependent cases do not make all community demands either inherently legitimate or illegitimate. Page 22 moves from the conclusion to references; page 23 is entirely bibliography.
Reading scope: Printed pages 1, 3, 15, 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, 23. Selected-page review, not a reading of the entire article.
R06 · Social Capital in the Creation of Human Capital
Coleman, James S. 1988. “Social Capital in the Creation of Human Capital.” American Journal of Sociology 94, Supplement: S95–S120. https://doi.org/10.1086/228943.
Notes: S04.
Use: Used in S04 for relational structures as resources for action. Page S98 defines social capital functionally; pages S102–S104 discuss obligations, expectations, trust, and information channels; pages S109–S110 distinguish family financial, human, and social capital and discuss parent–child relations.
Limits: The article uses its own social-capital framework and focuses on education and human capital. The citation provides a limited point of comparison without equating the differentiation network with social capital or reducing family to class reproduction. This review neither reproduces its statistical analysis nor treats it as direct evidence for the book’s composite opportunity-cost scenario.
Reading scope: Printed pages S95, S98, S99, S102, S103, S104, S109, S110. Selected-page review, not a reading of the entire article.
R07 · The Strength of Weak Ties
Granovetter, Mark S. 1973. “The Strength of Weak Ties.” American Journal of Sociology 78(6): 1360–1380. https://doi.org/10.1086/225469.
Notes: S05.
Use: Used in S05 for differences in tie strength, local bridging, information diffusion, and links across circles. Page 1364 states the bridge conditions and notes that weak ties are not automatically bridges; page 1369 limits the following discussion to illustrative applications; page 1373 connects information, mobility opportunities, and community organization.
Limits: The paper does not imply that every weak tie is a bridge or that all the relatives, landlords, schools, and contractors in the book are weak ties. It does not verify Chinese administrative procedures or the book’s full composite family pathway, and it does not establish an ontology of community.
Reading scope: Printed pages 1360, 1361, 1362, 1364, 1369, 1373. Selected-page review, not a reading of the entire article.
R08 · Neighborhoods and Violent Crime: A Multilevel Study of Collective Efficacy
Sampson, Robert J., Stephen W. Raudenbush, and Felton Earls. 1997. “Neighborhoods and Violent Crime: A Multilevel Study of Collective Efficacy.” Science 277(5328): 918–924. https://doi.org/10.1126/science.277.5328.918.
Notes: S05.
Use: Used in S05 as a specific empirical study of neighborhood cohesion, trust, and willingness to intervene. A 1995 survey of 8,782 residents across 343 Chicago neighborhood clusters found a negative association between collective efficacy and measures of violence; pages 922–923 present adjusted results and explicit limitations.
Limits: Page 923 explicitly states that the basic analysis is cross-sectional and does not prove causal effects; cohesion and informal control are inferred from informants, and the study is limited to one city. The 8,782 respondents must be distinguished from the 7,729 cases with sufficient data used in the reported analyses (page 924, note 21). The paper does not validate all local communities or the book’s administrative, school, housing, family, and occupational scenarios.
Reading scope: Printed pages 918, 919, 922, 923, 924. Selected-page review, not a reading of the entire article.
R09 · Collective Action and the Evolution of Social Norms
Ostrom, Elinor. 2000. “Collective Action and the Evolution of Social Norms.” Journal of Economic Perspectives 14(3): 137–158. https://doi.org/10.1257/jep.14.3.137.
Notes: S06.
Use: Used in S06 for conditional cooperation, willing punishers, experience and information about prior behavior, membership boundaries, and rules. Page 142 discusses cooperation and sanctions; pages 146–147 discuss experience and information; pages 148–150 address field conditions, membership, and self-organized rules; page 154 emphasizes contextual variables and further research.
Limits: The article does not establish a unified community will, the intrinsic legitimacy of community demands, or current platform administrators’ invitation, muting, removal, and visibility functions. Its evolutionary discussion does not establish a hereditary essence of particular nations. Page 155 contains the end of the acknowledgments and the start of the references; page 156 is bibliography. Pages 146–147 more directly support the discussion of experience and information and fall outside the original pinpoint ranges.
Reading scope: Printed pages 137, 139, 142, 143, 146, 147, 148, 149, 150, 154, 155, 156. Selected-page review, not a reading of the entire article.

国家医保局 财政部关于进一步做好基本医疗保险跨省异地就医直接结算工作的通知
Version: Yi Bao Fa [2022] No. 22; notice dated June 30, 2022; procedures effective January 1, 2023 · https://www.gov.cn/zhengce/zhengceku/2022-07/26/content_5702881.htm
Notes: F08.
Use: Explains interprovincial basic-medical-insurance registration, direct settlement, responsibilities at the place of insurance and treatment, payment rules, checks, and local implementing rules.
Limits: Limited to interprovincial direct settlement under basic insurance. Registration, coverage, and benefit rates must be distinguished by category and place-of-insurance/treatment rules. Does not establish a national medical-assistance checklist, the author’s family-advance/care scenario, or every local rule in 2026.
Reading scope: Parts II–III of the notice; Articles 2–17, 30–37, 43–44, and 57–66 of the attached procedures; form attachments were not separately read
R35 · National Healthcare Security Administration and Ministry of Finance, Notice on Further Strengthening the Management and Services of Direct Settlement for Medical Treatment away from the Place of Insurance
国家医保局 财政部关于进一步加强异地就医直接结算管理服务的通知
Version: Yi Bao Fa [2024] No. 21; dated September 5, 2024; published on the official website September 13, 2024 · https://www.nhsa.gov.cn/art/2024/9/13/art_104_13857.html
Notes: F08.
Use: Supplements rules on registration for interprovincial treatment, category-specific benefits, review at the place of treatment, and coordination across regions as the 2024 policy source named in F08.
Limits: Preserve regional deemed-registration/exemption and later-registration cases when describing prior registration. Benefit differentials and the 10/20 percentage-point figures are not uniform fixed rates for everyone. The notice concerns insurance settlement away from the place of insurance, not a nationwide medical-assistance or family-care document checklist.
Reading scope: Title, document number, signature date, and Parts I–IV of the notice; this does not claim a full-text reading.

Limits: Does not replace the author’s 2024 example with the 2025 eligibility or document requirements. This check does not assess all requirements of the new measures or claim reading their attachments. The signature, publication, and effective dates remain distinct.
Reading scope: Full title, document number, signature date, commencement metadata, and Article 11
Scope of Source Support
The following notes identify the limits of external support. They neither revise the author’s theory nor equate an unverified proposition with a disproved one. Read them together with the corresponding passages and notes.
Reissuance of community certificates
Passage: Chapter 17
Related passages: CNFINAL-CH17-N041
Reissuance of a community certificate depends on the certificate type, locality, issuing body, and applicable procedure. It does not imply a general right to reissuance or guarantee that an application will change the outcome.
Uses of enterprise records
Passage: Chapter 20
Related passages: CNFINAL-CH20-N049
This passage discusses enterprise records and their consequences within state procedures. The cited material does not exhaustively establish every authorized user or use of every record type; it should not be read as proof that all retrieval is confined to the listed matters.
Correction of factual archive records
Passage: Chapter 20
Related passages: CNFINAL-CH20-N067
Whether and how a factual record in an archive can be corrected requires separate verification for the record type and applicable rules. This general legal reference supplies no uniform correction procedure for all archives and does not imply that all lawful correction is prohibited.
Enforcement following nonfulfillment
Passage: Chapter 30
Related passages: CNFINAL-CH30-N024
This passage concerns enforcement when obligations under a legally effective instrument remain unfulfilled. It does not make compulsory enforcement a necessary route for every payment; initiation, completion, and actual recovery depend on the applicable procedure and case.
Local admission and subsequent student registration
Passage: Chapter 30
Related passages: CNFINAL-CH30-N016
This passage illustrates distinct stages of local admission review and student-registration filing after enrollment. It is not a verified complete checklist for one locality, year, and application category. Local material requirements must be checked against the relevant policy, rather than inferred from national registration measures or assembled from policies for different localities.
Registration rules and local admission checklists
Passage: Chapter 32
Related passages: CNFINAL-CH32-N014
The 2025 student-registration measures are cited here for information collection, filing, updating, and continuity after initial enrollment. They do not supply a universal admissions checklist or automatically determine later examination eligibility. Locality, year, application category, and subsequent matters require separate checks.
A further limit concerns the relationship between the 2012 Labor Contract Law amendment and Articles 7, 10, and 30: this edition’s bibliographic work relies on earlier verification records and did not reread the original amendment decision. Whether a channel applies, whether a procedure is completed, and what results follow depend on the jurisdiction, date, and case. A composite scenario does not become an investigated case report simply because sources are attached.
